Rep. Rohrabacher Calls on Taiwanese President to Support Freedom of Press, Democracy and Human Rights in Communist China

May 10, 2013

Today, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) sent a letter to President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan imploring him to allow the New Tang Dynasty media network to continue to their transmissions using a Chunghwa Telecom satellite. The Taiwanese Ministry of Transportation and Communications is the largest shareholder in Chunghwa Telecom.

“New Tang Dynasty broadcasts vital news and information to the people of Communist China, news which the Communist leadership does not want the Chinese people to know,” wrote Rohrabacher.  “I believe that Taiwan as a democracy should do all that it can to support a free press, to support democracy and to support the political freedom of those living under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party.”

In 2011, the last time the contract between New Tang Dynasty and Chunghwa Telecom was up for renewal, Congressman Rohrabacher wrote to President Ma with a similar request.

“Two years ago, I was very pleased to see that New Tang Dynasty was allowed to keep broadcasting,” said Rohrabacher. “Taiwan did the right thing and I applauded President Ma for doing it. I hope  he will again show that he is a strong leader and support human rights in China and allow New Tang Dynasty to stay on the air.”

Rep. Rohrabacher is Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats.
