Rep. Rohrabacher Expresses Concern To Secy Clinton Over Integrity of Upcoming Afghan Elections
Washington, Aug 10, 2009 -
Today, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) called on Secretary Clinton and the U.S. government to work with the Afghans to ensure a free and honest election on August 20th.
“We should not look the other way if there is large scale fraud being used to keep the current Afghan government in power,” writes Rohrabacher in a August 10th letter to Secretary of State Clinton. “Our young military personnel are not putting their lives at risk in Afghanistan to facilitate a fraudulent election.”
In the letter, Rohrabacher points out the election in Afghanistan is competitive and not one sided, with a number of viable candidates who could well win the election if it is conducted fairly.
“This isn’t just about Karzai’s reelection; this is about the people of Afghanistan making the decision through the ballot box,” writes Rohrabacher. “Whether it’s Karzai or Abdullah, the people of Afghanistan deserve the right to have an honest election.”
Rohrabacher, who has been active on Afghan issues for over three decades, noted there have been reports of possible ballot box stuffing and urged the United States do its best to work with local election observers to make sure that doesn’t happen.
“A clearly fraudulent election would be a mockery of U.S. commitment there,” says Rohrabacher.
