Rep. Rohrabacher Congratulates Ukraine on Release of Jailed Former Ministers
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats issued the following statement in reaction to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s pardon of six prisoners on April 7th:
“Ukrainian President Yanukovych took an important step towards securing the rule of law and improving the democratic spirit of his country by pardoning former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, former Minister of Environmental Protection Heorhiy Filipchuk and four other prisoners. President Yanukovych demonstrated an important humanitarian component of free societies.
“This move is a step in the right direction. While it is imperative that Ukraine continue to aggressively attack corruption, it also needs to reform its justice system and foster the democratic spirit. I applaud the President and Ukrainian authorities for the positive way they addressed this matter, and urge the government to continue to resolve the remaining cases that have serious political implications.”
