Congressman Rohrabacher's Statement on Iraq Elections
Washington, Jan 24, 2005 - “January 30th will be a historic day for the Middle East and the world. The Iraqi people will take the next step toward a free and democratic society as they place their votes for a transitional Iraqi government. Make no mistake, this election marks a break with the past and the beginning of a brighter future - it is the turning point. The past few months have been marred by violence as terrorists in Iraq have sought to derail the elections by any means possible. Just this week, head terrorist Abu Musab Zarqawi declared a war on democracy, terming it ‘an evil principle.’ His dastardly attacks on our troops and innocent Iraqis demonstrate the desperation of a man and an ideology on the run. The innate human desire for freedom will not be denied by the threat of violence or the scare tactics being employed. Our troops have done an astounding job providing security and making the elections possible. Now it is time for the Iraqi people to embrace the responsibility of self-governance. It is also time for those who have criticized our efforts in Iraq to recognize the importance of this event and that their efforts only do a disservice to a safer and better future for the Iraqi people. On Sunday, the American people, and all people who believe in democracy and respect for the individual, will stand with a democratic Iraq as they begin the process of becoming a free people.”
