Rohrabacher: Obama’s Cuba Plan Heavy-handed, Wrong-headed
WASHINGTON – Regarding President Obama’s plan to normalize relations with Communist Cuba, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats, today released the following statement:
“I am a long-standing champion of the principles of free trade, but it must be free trade between free people. I strongly oppose the Administration’s efforts to establish trade with the Cuban gangster regime, which will only strengthen the hand of the ruling clique.
“The president’s covert maneuvering to open relations with Cuba’s Communist dictatorship was wrong and so was the way he did it. There seems to be a pattern in the president’s bypassing our democratic process to achieve his goals. Maybe that is what endears him to the Castro brothers.
“President Obama is coming to the rescue of the Castro dictatorship at exactly the time. Venezuelan and Russian subsidies for the regime have been evaporating as the price of oil drops. This is not the time for us to infuse tourist dollars into a country run by a dictatorship.
“The idea that trade alone will soften the hand of a tyrant has not worked. In the end, the ruling clique manipulates such trade so that their grip on power is strengthened. Thus, President Obama’s scheme is not good for the United States, not good for the people of Cuba, and not good for the cause of freedom.
“I will support efforts in the Congress to thwart this heavy-handed and wrong-headed maneuver on the part of our president.”
