Press Release

WASHINGTON – Rep. Dana Rohrabacher on Tuesday, marking World Press Freedom Day, called on governments across the globe to respect the rights of journalists. He released the following statement:

“In the United States and across the World, journalists and reporters are a key part of creating and protecting free societies. In places where the press is free, those at the top are less likely to abuse their power and governments are more readily held responsible for their actions.

“As a former journalist myself, it is especially troubling to watch reporters being unjustly punished for simply doing their job. Governments, such as those in China and Turkey, that crack down on the press only highlight their own insecurity and fear. All journalists should be able to go about their work without harassment; those who are imprisoned wrongfully, including Azerbaijan’s Khadija Ismayilova, Iran’s Mohammad Seddigh Kaboudvand and Ethopia’s Eskinder Nega, must be set free.”
