Congressman Rohrabacher Criticizes Security Deal With Chinese Shipping Company
Washington, Mar 24, 2006 -
Today Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) issued a sharp rebuke of the announced contract with Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., a Chinese company based in Hong Kong, to scan for radioactive material at the BahamasPort.
“Hutchinson Whampoa is not a Hong Kong company, it’s a Chinese company based in Hong Kong,”said Rep. Rohrabacher. “In a time when the People’s Republic of China has partnered with some of the most blood-thirsty and threatening regimes in the world today, such as Iran and Sudan, we’re making them the gatekeepers into one of the major entry ways into our county. This makes no sense.”
As is widely reported, the chairman of Hutchinson, Li Ka-Shing, does the bidding of the communist dictatorship in Beijing. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a U.S. military intelligence report, once marked "secret," cited Hutchison in 1999 as a potential risk for smuggling arms and other prohibited materials into the United States from the Bahamas.
“Li Ka-Shing has put himself in a position in which he is unable to reject the direction and commands of Beijing, much less criticize them for any wrong doing,” stated Rep. Rohrabacher. “Now we are entrusting him with ensuring that no radioactive material is passing through the Bahamasand into our country. That’s ludicrous.”
